Case study – Beef + Lamb NZ Genetics

A partnership for database excellence

Beef + Lamb New Zealand Genetics has forged a strategic relationship with Rezare over recent years as the genetics group seeks to maintain, develop and innovate its genetic databases.

B+LNZ Genetics IT Programme Manager David Campbell says Rezare has played some clearly defined roles when working alongside his organisation.

One key area has been ensuring the ongoing smooth operation and maintenance of B+LNZ Genetics’ Sheep Improvement Limited (SIL) database.

Far from acting in an occasional systems maintenance role for a pre-established database, David says Rezare’s role is more dynamic and active.

Rezare staff successfully engage on a weekly basis with key stakeholders to discuss any changes, improvements and modifications required on the older system.

“You don’t have to explain things several times over. And when you meet the next time, the project has progressed, you are not revisiting what should have been done.”

“John Davys has a lot of background knowledge on the system with excellent communication skills that see him in weekly stand up meetings to discuss any changes or improvements that may have to be made.”

David says the relationship with Rezare has always been very transparent, with the company keeping B+LNZ Genetics well informed of any challenges or issues arising during the process.

Separate to the SIL maintenance role, Rezare is also working with B+LNZ Genetics on the development of a new genotype database for the sheep industry.

A key part of the work involves incorporating Application Programme Interface (API)s, essentially digital “sockets”, that enable data to move between systems.

David says Rezare has an in-depth understanding of NZ agri and quickly understood genetics’ systems to progress to agreed targets on projects on time.

“You don’t have to explain things several times over. And when you meet the next time, the project has progressed, you are not revisiting what should have been done.”

David describes Rezare as a strategic partner for B+LNZ Genetics, sharing critical information in confidence to help develop improved systems that are not only easier for farmers to input data into, but also extract valuable, informative reports from.

“Rezare are an incredibly ethical organisation to deal with and Rezare have a great track record with us.”
